The Conviction to Lead, Book Review

Albert Mohler, the youngest president in the history of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, shares his ideas and lessons on leadership in his book,Conviction to Lead, The: 25 Principles for Leadership that Matters.  He’s an engaging storyteller and willing to cut to the heart of the leadership crisis we face in many of our churches and other convictiontoleadChristian institutions.

Essentially, Mohler argues, leaders often fall into two categories—Believers, who pursue knowledge and passionately defend their beliefs, but who may not have the skills and abilities to manage and lead an organization.  The Leaders, on the other hand, may know everything there is to know about leadership and management, but at their core they don’t know what they believe and are easily swayed from situation to situation.

Mohler’s goal in this book is “to turn the Believers into Leaders and the Leaders into Believers. My goal is to know the blocks out from under the current models of leadership and forge a new way. I stake my life on the priority of right beliefs and convictions, and I want to lead so that those very beliefs are perpetuated in others . . . My goal is to redefine Christian leadership so that it is inseparable from passionately held beliefs, and so motivate those who are deeply committed to truth to be ready for leadership.”

Because he covers 25 different principles of leadership, Mohler is bound to hit on issues close to home to any reader.  He moves swiftly through the short, easy-to-read chapters to cover leaders as thinkers, readers, speakers, teachers, managers, writers, and media experts.  He touches often on 21st century issues facing leaders, especially how to use technology as an asset in the modern age.

Many leadership books leave you walking away with a new strategy or program that you implement in the short-term, but ultimately abandon long-term.  Mohler’s book really emphasizes more core issues, focusing on developing character and strengths.  He is calling for changes in core values and not just offering a 12-step program to leadership success.

There were times I wish he had offered more practical advice and application, but a leader who really takes these 25 principles to heart will change from the inside-out.  That, ultimately, could create the long-term change we so rarely achieve from leadership self-help books.
