Knowing God By Name, Book Review

Knowing God By Name: Names of God that Bring Hope and Healing
by David Wilkerson

In his book, Knowing God by Name, David Wilkerson didn’t try to cover every name of God.  Instead, he offers a more personal study, the names that have impacted him the most and applied powerfully and personally to his life and ministry.  It’s so true that in our walks with God, we find He reveals aspects of His character to us during different seasons and these are the names we cling to and that mean so much to us over time.knowinggod

I’ve read several books and Bible studies on the names of God and honestly wondered if there would be much new or of interest here.  Every chapter, however, held new lessons, new information, new perspectives for me.  It’s pretty straightforward prose and mostly felt like listening to him preach or teach on each topic.  He covers ten names of God in the book and even those you may know well (like The Lord My Shepherd) will still likely be approached in a new way that is both encouraging and challenging to your spiritual walk.

Some of the comments such as those about America enjoying the most prosperity it’s ever seen seem out of place in our current economy, a sign that they are reprinting a book without updating it.  He also had a tendency to write ideas based on his ‘gut feeling’ or personal thoughts, never more evident than when he strings together a paragraph of “I believe that this means….I believe what will happen is….”  I value his input and insight, but know that those statements aren’t so much Bible study as they are personal opinion.

Overall, this would be a great personal study book for Christians, particularly long-term Christians, to dig more in depth into the names of God.  It’s not an exhaustive study and isn’t meant to be, but would work especially well for those who are learning about the names of God from other sources, as well.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own.
